Children’s Religious Education Classes

1. CCD  – weekly religion classes on Sundays at Blessed Sacrament from 10-11:20am beginning in the Fall for baptized 1st – 8th graders. All Public school children should be enrolled in CCD during the school year. 2nd & 8th graders need to also be registered for the Sacrament Prep Classes.
2. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd  – weekly Pre-K program  on Sundays at Blessed Sacrament from 10-11:20am beginning in the Fall for ages 3-6 year olds.
3. Monthly First Communion Preparation Classes – for all 2nd Graders: Catholic and Public School students should be enrolled in these classes in addition to CCD or Catholic School religion classes. These monthly classes will be held on Mondays from 6:30-7:45pm.
4. Monthly Confirmation Preparation Classes (for all 8th Graders: Catholic and Public School students should be enrolled in these classes in addition to CCD or Catholic School religion classes).  These monthly classes will be held on Mondays from 6:30-8:00pm.
5. OCIC (weekly classes for unbaptized children 7 yrs old and older to prepare them for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, & Eucharist) at Easter Vigil, and then the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation in the following year).  The schedule will be given in the Fall. 6. OCIT (weekly classes for unbaptized teens to prepare them for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, & Eucharist) at Easter Vigil, and then the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation in the following year). Monthly First Communion classes for 2nd graders(Required)

“The Eucharist is ‘the source and summit of the Christian life.’ ‘The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.” (CCC 1324)

In addition to weekly CCD (or Catholic School religion classes), it is mandatory for 2nd graders from St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish to prepare for the Sacraments of Penance & Reconciliation and First Communion by attending monthly Sacrament Prep classes on Monday evenings beginning in the Fall and completing the assignments given throughout the year in preparation for these Sacraments. Assignments include learning prayers & practicing the steps for Confession & Receiving Holy Communion. Children will have a day of retreat for their First Penance & Reconciliation and before their First Communion.

Monthly Confirmation classes for 8th graders(Required)

“Confirmation perfects Baptismal grace; it is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds.” (CCC 1316)

In addition to weekly CCD (or Catholic School religion classes), it is mandatory for 8th graders from St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish to attend monthly Confirmation classes on Monday evenings and complete the assignments given throughout the year in preparation for their Confirmation. An information Session will be held in the Fall. Each candidate for Confirmation will need to choose a Confirmation Sponsor (a practicing Catholic who is already confirmed, attends mass weekly, and if married, is married in the Catholic Church *see Letter from Fr. Cicero). He or she will also need to prayerfully choose a Confirmation Name (a saint whom the candidate upholds as a model & intercessor), complete 14 service hours before Confirmation, and attend the Confirmation Retreat.

“For the purpose of Christian initiation, children who have reached the age of reason, generally understood as seven years of age, are considered adults in a limited sense. As much as possible, their formation in the faith should follow the general pattern of the ordinary catechumenate, making use of the appropriate adaptations permitted in the rite. ‘They should receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil, together with the older catechumens.'” (National Directory for Catechesis 2005, #36A, #3)

At St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Children ages 7 and older who are unbaptized are enrolled in OCIC/OCIT classes (Order of Christian Initiation adapted for Children/Teens). They prepare for the reception of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion at the Easter Vigil and then deepen that understanding and prepare for the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation in the following year. Please contact Sister Alina Marie to arrange for your child’s class. Additionally, OCIC children are expected to attend the scheduled OCIA Rites according to the schedule that will be given in the Fall, in preparation for Easter Sacraments. They need a godparent (see Fr. Cicero’s letter – someone who is not the parent, is already baptized and confirmed Catholic, attending Mass weekly, & if married, married in the Catholic Church) and will be expected to complete the assignments in preparation for their sacraments. They need to be brought to weekly Sunday or Saturday evening Mass in anticipation of living as a Catholic.
